Established in 1972 by the Rotary Club of Palo Alto, La Comida offers an opportunity for seniors to gather, dine, share stories, and forge lasting bonds. Here, the essence of our mission is to offer not just a meal but a moment of connection in a nurturing environment where every senior feels heard and valued.
At La Comida, we believe in the power of a shared meal to bring people together and create a sense of community. Whether you’re setting the tables or sharing a smile, your efforts as a volunteer can make a tangible difference in the lives of many who look forward to our meals as the highlight of their day.
What Does a Day of Volunteering at La Comida Look Like?
Your day as a volunteer starts in the kitchen, where the day’s meals begin to take shape. Under the supervision of our site managers, Mary Ruth Batchelder and Shyla Duarte, you’ll help prepare the ingredients for the day’s lunch. It’s a busy time, so everyone pitches in to chop vegetables, season meats, and ensure that everything is ready for service.
As lunch hour approaches, you’ll find the dining area buzzing with activity. This is where you’ll meet many of our regular diners, like Craig Bright, who come not only for the nutrition but also for the camaraderie. Appreciating La Comida’s services, Craig tries to give back by helping others through his nonprofit project as “a way I can enrich the world and share the wealth.”
While serving meals, you’ll have the chance to chat with the seniors, listen to their stories, and see firsthand the joy and appreciation they feel. After the meal, you’ll help clean up and reset the space for the next day, always with a sense of accomplishment for a job well done.
In your interactions and the smiles you exchange, you’ll see the impact of your work. Our volunteers, by serving 260 meals daily across two sites, ensure that our seniors not only receive a nutritious meal but also the social interaction that is vital to their health and happiness. In 2023, we served 850 seniors, many of whom told us that the socialization they found at La Comida helped them maintain their spirit and physical health.
The People You’ll Meet at La Comida
Our seniors come from all walks of life. With 59% of our diners aged 75 or older and 41% living below the federal poverty level, their backgrounds and life experiences are as varied as the meals we serve. About 35% also live alone, making their social interactions at La Comida even more valuable. These meals provide more than just nutritional sustenance; they offer a lifeline, allowing seniors to remain active in a vibrant community.
Volunteers often find themselves engrossed in conversations as nourishing as the meals. Each exchange—whether a shared laugh or story—helps bridge the gap between generations and fosters a deeper understanding and respect.
These interactions are mutually enriching, offering volunteers a glimpse into the wealth of knowledge and resilience that our seniors hold. At the same time, they provide our diners with the joy of companionship and the comfort of being heard and appreciated. It’s these moments of connection that underscore the importance of community and the profound impact of simple acts of kindness.
The Impact of Your Contribution
The growth and reach of La Comida’s program are significant. From serving 170 meals per day before the pandemic to 355 at its peak, we now serve 260 daily meals across our two Palo Alto sites. Annually, this amounts to 65,000 meals, each a vital interaction for the seniors who rely on us.
Senior diners often express how these gatherings are a highlight of their day, offering them a chance to engage, share laughter, and sustain their zest for life—with 96% of them saying that socialization at La Comida helps maintain their physical health and spirits.
Being a volunteer at La Comida means being a crucial part of a community that looks out for its most vulnerable. You’ll also experience the immense satisfaction of knowing your efforts contribute to a vital cause: combating senior isolation and hunger.
